How to apply thermal grease to the processor

In this article I will talk about such an important point in computer business – replacing thermal paste on the processor. You will learn how to properly apply thermal grease to the processor, how often you need to change thermal grease, and why do you need thermal grease and why to change it.

Why do I need to change thermal grease?
The processor contributes to a huge number of operations within one second. Such a high intensity is fraught with the danger of overheating. To eliminate this problem, fans with special radiators are used. Close contact with the cooler, where the heat transfer occurs, is due to the use of thermal paste – the original insulator. Approximately similar processes occur with the video card.

Untimely replacement of the paste threatens the following troubles:

a situation with the system freezing, which makes the work uncomfortable and can often lead to irretrievable loss of information;
overheating is dangerous and the failure of the motherboard.
Such moments often end in expensive computer repairs. The initial layer of paste is applied at the stage of mounting the processor directly to the board. In the case of a equipped PC or laptop that falls under the terms of warranty service, this is not recommended to be done on your own, because the user will lose the right to a free service.

Further, for processors with high power, a similar procedure is necessary once every 12 months. Less often, chips with low performance require replacement. Unscheduled application occurs with frequent freezes, spontaneous reboots and a significant slowdown.

How to choose the right thermal grease
First of all, listen to such advice as giving up the cheapest insulators. An example would be KTP-8 grease. Manufacturers offer many more efficient and quality materials.

Typically, components such as zinc oxide and silicone are included in the thermal paste. There are samples with manufacturer information about the presence in the insulator of carbon and ceramic particles, silver.

If your processor is very powerful, try not to save money and purchase a composition containing gold and copper. Thus, it is possible to achieve optimal thermal conductivity.

How to apply thermal grease to the processor
The availability of all information about the application features and the competent choice of material will not yet be a guarantee against some common errors that can lead to processor malfunctions. A number of recommendations should be clearly observed:

drawing a uniform layer on all parts of the processor in places of contact with the radiator;
do not get involved in laying too thick a bowl of pasta. A minimal transparent layer is enough, through which the symbols on the surface of the parts should be distinguishable;
reduce the quality of the contact any gaps and omissions in the applied thermal grease.
1. Stage of preparation
After disconnecting from the network, all elements that impede access to the chipset location zone are dismantled. The cooler with the radiator and the wall of the system unit are removed. When working with a laptop, you will need to remove the battery.

2.Removing old grease
Dried particles are removed after removal of the cooling system. On new processors, it is also recommended to perform a similar procedure, because in most cases, equipment with cheap thermal paste options is sold.

Cotton napkins or cotton swabs are best suited for such purposes.

When removed, the best way is to use an alcohol solution or isopropyl alcohol. A regular eraser is convenient for particulate matter, and a simple school ruler for viscous material. Using an eraser is a rather time-consuming procedure, but this is the only way to protect the processor from damage.

The uneven surface of the contacting parts requires painstaking removal. Even the most microscopic residues will adversely affect the thermal conductivity characteristics.

3. Applying paste
We place small drops of material in the center of the processor. Due to its larger area, the radiator does not need to be lubricated. If this rule is violated, an excessive amount of grease is expended, and the likelihood of a short circuit on the contact board is increased.

For uniform distribution, you can use:

rubber gloves;
miniature spatula or brush;
SIM card or plastic of the same thickness.
Try to avoid the use of metal objects during this operation.

4.Completion of work
We install a cooler on the chipset and return everything to the motherboard. Finally, a fan is connected to the network and the PC is assembled.

Using the BIOS, the system temperature is tested. It should not go beyond 40 degrees, and a range of 60-90 can be for modifications of the Semptron processor and AMD.

Timely application of thermal paste and preventive maintenance of the device will guarantee the smooth operation of the processor.
